Heritage Cluster's Launch Event

Elizabeth Munro July 2013

The University of Leicester invites creative people with great ideas to help turn historical assets about three buildings in Leicester’s Cultural Quarter into interesting, engaging and dynamic events or experiences.

The idea is to attract and inspire people who wouldn’t normally engage with historical archive information. We invite you to turn this information into meaningful and engaging interpretation, so that new audiences can connect with Leicester’s past.

The project is based around the historic interpretation of a cluster of key buildings and their history located on Rutland Street. We have film, unique adverts, pictures, sound clips, amazing stories of personal experiences and international travels not forgetting the great elastic robbery of 1875!

We’re looking for people who can translate this information into different formats, including but not exclusively:

film, dance, theatre, comedy, installation, sculpture, art, craft, design, exhibition, interactive platforms, augmented reality, graphics and online platforms etc.

Project Launch - 18 July 2013, 5:30 to 7:00pm at the LCB Depot

Should you wish to discuss the project before the event, please feel free to get in contact.

Archives, Assets and Audiences catch-up event.

Elizabeth Munro July 2013

The Heritage Cluster is part of the Archives, Assets and Audiences project that is funded by Arts & Humanities Research Council and University of Leicester. We are just one of the projects taking part in this larger scheme, with a variety of researchers and creative professionals actively engaging with our city and wider communities industrial heritage. It was our first time to introduce our projects to each other. We presented our archives and assets and how our projects were forming based off this research. Sharing these with our colleagues allowed for a new perspective and lead to some great discussions, debates and ideas. It was a productive afternoon and it was fascinating to explore other projects research focus and how they are creatively approaching these areas. It will be great to catch up with all the projects in the future and see how they develop and continue our discussions on how these projects could integrate into Leicester relationship with it’s industrial history.

The launch event for the Leicester's Cultural Quarter Heritage Cluster was a great success with a full house of local creatives. The evening began with an introduction to the project by Dr Rebecca Madgin, from the University of Leicester, who explained the origins of the project. Don and Elizabeth Munro followed on with a presentation with imagery, films and stories that introduced the cluster's three buildings and their assets. The assets were chosen to entice and engage creatives with the project and eventually new audiences.

After the presentation we opened up the floor for questions and talked through people's queries. We then allowed everyone to explore the various archives we brought with us and had some great discussions and found new collaborations being formed.
